Intellectual Disabilities Agency of the New River Valley has a long history of service to families in the New River Valley of Virginia who have members with intellectual challenges. The agency, started by parents who were seeking services and programs for their loved ones, was operating previously under two names: New River Valley Agency for Persons with Mental Retardation OR Leisure DIrections,, but we have changed our name in response to the nation-wide movement to not use the word retardation.

We offer a variety of programs, many in collaboration with our local Special Olympics. Most are offered at a minimal cost and we offer scholarships for participants with special needs whenever possible.
